THE COFFEE
Cherry beans The location of the Monte Alegre Farm allows the best conditions to grow fine coffees. The special combination of latitude and altitude along with the surrounding mountains provide the plantation with specific micro-climatic conditions not to be found in other parts of Brazil. Seasons are very marked, so that the coffee can flower in spring and grow all through summer. The beans mature in the autumn and are harvested during the winter.
The coffee plantation is operated and controlled according the databank we have inputted in our computers network:
  • Coffee Areas planted before 1917 - Those areas were quited and replaced with new coffee trees;
  • Coffee Areas planted from 1917 to 1960 - 50% still remains with the original coffee trees planted first time and represents 15% from our total coffee plantation;
  • Coffee Areas planted from 1960 to 1982 - Represents 40% from our total coffee plantation;
  • Coffee Areas planted from 1982 to 1992 - Represents 25% from our total coffee plantation;
  • Coffee planted from 1992 to 1999 - Represents 20% from our total coffee plantation.
Coffee nursery trees
Coffee tree Monte Alegre Farm produces around 100.000 bags yearly -- 30% of washed coffee, 10% of semi-washed coffee, 50% of natural dry coffee, 8% of swept coffee beans and 2% others -- from 7,500,000 Arabica trees of the Mundo Novo, Catuaí, Icatú and Bourbon varieties.
The entire production is hand-picked. The berries are selected, pulped and carefully sun dried for about 40 hours. After this natural drying, the beans are stored in wooden bins, in a building made of old bricks with a ceramic tile roof, keeping the humidity and temperature ideal to coffee storage. Drying terrace
Wooden bins Samples are picked out of the wooden bins and the coffee is processed only a few days before shipment. With this procedure, Monte Alegre Farm can guarantee the maintenance of the original flavor and aroma of its coffees.
Monte Algre Farm have three facilities to receive, prepare, dry, and store the pergamino besides the full milling processing: beneficiating, screening, densimetric and color sorting machines.

These unique conditions, combined with almost a century of family tradition and experience, give the coffee of Monte Alegre Farm the mark of best quality: a truly outstanding coffee.
